Alkaline Glazed, Wood-Fired Pitcher – Mark Hewitt
Fresh from the Spring Kiln Opening 2017, this alkaline glazed, wood-fired half gallon pitcher features salt glazed circular panels and blue glass runs; the balance, the heft, the sensuous curves and textures and colors, the perfect marriage of utility and aesthetics all attest to the unrivaled skill and creative genius of its maker, Chatham County’s own Mark Hewitt.
Mark Hewitt is at once a world-renowned contemporary potter and one of the foremost scholars of traditional pottery around the world. His intimate familiarity with the traditional tools and materials and processes of the world’s leading pottery centers through the ages can be seen and felt in the products of his studio right here in Pittsboro.
Working with local clays and glaze materials and utilizing techniques tried and proven by countless generations of craftspeople who came before, Mark harnesses the elemental spirit of the earth itself, embodied in just the right mix of local clay.
The immutable binding forces of the universe are brought to bear on the shapeless lump at the center of the potter’s wheel, channeled through the potter’s hands; fiercely for the first instant, then firmly but ever so gently, as the form emerges to meet the potter’s eye.
Heated, finally, to the very brink of glassy molten collapse by the eternal heat of the sun, freed, as it were, from the flaming flesh of the forest trees, then focused and concentrated with all its transformative power in a fiery vortex at the heart of Mark’s precisely designed and meticulously constructed kiln, once disparate particles of ever-so-malleable Carolina clay are bound forever in stone.
And thus was this vessel born.
