New! - Two Arthur Osborne Ivorex Wall Plaques "A Friendly Call and The Old Folks Home"
Unique wall plaques featuring designed by Arthur Osborne and made of genuine Ivorex in Faversham, England, circa the early 1900's. The color of the Ivorex in this plaque has aged to a beautiful mellow "old ivory" shade, the touches of applied water-color paint give it lovely accents, and the paraffin wax finish can still be felt on the surface. The back lower left corner has the Osborne ink stamp which has faded with age, and the front right lower corner has the engraved AO initials which were used until Arthur Osborne's death in 1943, after which the initials used were WD for Walter Davis.
These rare Ivorex plaques are in wonderful antique preowned condition. The ink stamp is somewhat faded, and it may need to be carefully cleaned to look its' very best.
*There is no ivory in "Ivorex" plaques. These highly detailed plaques were first sculpted in clay by Osborne, then unique gelatin molds were made from the clay "master" plaques. A special fine, high-grade, plaster of paris powder was sifted thoroughly to remove any lumps, then mixed with water and poured into the gelatin molds, and any bubbles were skimmed from the top. When the plaques were hard they were removed from the molds and air dried in a heated room. After the plaques were completely dry the color accents were hand painted on using watercolor paints. When the paint was dry the plaques were dipped in hot paraffin wax, which gave the plaques their "ivory like" appearance, and then buffed to a beautiful shine.
Dimensions: 9.25" x 6.25".
