The gonifs - klezmer music!
The gonifs (Yiddish for thieves/crooks) is a San Francisco klezmer super group founded by singer, accordionist and Yiddish music scholar Jeanette Lewicki. The band members, including clarinet virtuoso Peter Jaques, versatile jazz trumpeter Darren Johnston (Nice Guy Trio, Brass Menageri, Darren Johnston Quintet), bassist Daniel Fabricant (Nice Guy Trio) and drummer Aaron Kierbel (Rupa & The April Fishes), have been working together for years in diverse projects. Their eponymous debut album is the culmination of a year long monthly residency of sold out shows at the Porto Franco Art Parlor, where the gonifs performed with internationally renowned trio Veretski Pass, who appear as special guests on this album.
