Exquisite Giclee Print of Refuge Tree, by Kumar Lama
This is a very high quality giclee print by the artist, Kumar Lama. He painted the original (5.5 x 8 feet) on commission by Lama Tharchin for HH Thinley Norbu Rinpoche, eldest son of Dudjom Rinpoche. The donor (to this auction) watched the painting manifest over the two years that Kumar created it at Pema Osel Ling in Corralitos, California. It is professionally framed (framing alone was over $400). The dark teal silk mat and secondary burgandy inner mat perfectly compliment the beautiful colors in the thanka.
The work is very precise, detailed and meticulously executed. Many of the fine lines on this painting are made with brushes of only a few bristles. The skill that it takes to paint these lines without a trace of a wiggle is the result of 30 years of daily practice. Kumar Lama said that he likes the prints better, as the reduction is size made for an even sharper image, with exquisite colors.
The imagery of the Refuge Tree, also referred to as Refuge Assembly, Refuge Field, Merit Field, Field of Merit, or Field of Accumulation is a key part of a visualization and foundational meditation practice common to Vajrayana Buddhism. Those who have started Ngondro under Lama Willa are familiar with a Refuge Tree from a Kagyu lineage. This one is a Nyimgma Refuge Tree in the Dudjom Tersar style. One does not have to accomplish the Dudjom Ngondro to display and enjoy this amazing work of art.
Dimensions: 14" x 21", 23" x 29" framed.
