Fine Art Made By Incarcerated Teens - "Confined Not Defined 2"

This print is made by students in the Literacy for Incarcerated Teens / Galinsky Coaching tPOPP Program. The works are derived from the lesson plan "Confined But Not Defined" where we explore in both writing and discussion: what is a role model, who are our role models, what are the qualities our role models have that we aspire to, and how do we actually become like our role models.

This pieces features: Michelle Obama, Sigmund Freud, Drake, Muhammad Ali, Ellen, Myself, Lebron, Ms. Niel, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The hand prints represent a signature to confirm who each student strives to be. The multi-colored hand prints repurpose the act of being fingerprinted and stand as a declaration to the role model that each teen aspires to. The teens are from facilities in NYC including: Rikers Island Jail, "The Tombs" (the Manhattan Detention Complex), Brentwood Residential Center, and Brookwood Secure Center.

Each canvas is approximately 36 inches by 24 inches, the paint used is Windsor & Newton Acrylic, and has been custom matted, framed, and pressed with UV protective plexiglass, thoughtfully provided by Galleria on Third museum quality framing service.
