Martha Wilson, Chrysanthemum, 2009, pigmented ink print on hahnemuhle bamboo paper, 16 X 16 in. (40.64 X 40.64 cm), signed and numbered on front, Edition 17 of 25
Since the early 1970s, Martha Wilson has created conceptually based performances, videos, and photo/text compositions that grapple with constructions and manifestations of feminism, identity, and the way we construct and present ourselves. Frequently taking herself as subject, Wilson creates transgressive, avant-garde works that address political and social issues, teasing out complexity and nuance by infusing her work with playful gestures and humorous juxtapositions.
Martha Wilson is an American feminist performance artist and the founding director of Franklin Furnace art organization. She is a recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, and an Obie Award and a Bessie Award for commitment to artists’ freedom of expression. She is represented by P•P•O•W gallery in New York City.
