"The Other Side" Frank Beurskens

"The Other Side" Frank Beurskens. Glazed ceramic and leather. 15" diameter.

The Other Side emerged after contemplating the current political tension strangling our country.  Both sides set in their way, deeply patterned thinking, worn as if wagon wheels traveled for decades across the same path.  The cross stitched leather that binds the two sides together reflects the fragile, flexible, thread that binds the opposing forces together in some way.  That binding might be through family, friendship, respect, religion, intellect, or ignorance.  The back and forth represented in the cross stitching honors the need for both sides to seek out some connection with the other in order to keep our culture together.  This piece is about the politic today.  And a reminder that one side will not change the furrows deeply embedded in the other, but there are always small openings to find in the other, that may keep the whole, whole.  “We will become our opposite if we do not learn to accommodate the opposition within us” – Carl Jung

Driven by a need to create, experiment, and explore, I work as bricoleur, drawn to raw materials that have a soulful connection; something with a story.  My artistic quest began with wood but now expands to all forms of matter as I begin to see something other than what is there, in everything, everywhere.  The challenge is seeking simplicity in form and function while honoring the uniqueness of each material encountered “…where the inner shows itself in the outer, and the outer reflects the inner.”
