My assemblages are created with nothing particular in mind except the conversation that happens between the objects that I use. The objects themselves come together in the piece as though there were conversations happening in the space between them and the way they fit together. 

Their stories don’t happen in a linear sense. As abstract pieces I believe each piece should have a relationship to the viewer - and it's up to the viewer to create the story or interpretation. The pieces that are used are found objects, old jewelry, automotive parts, bicycle parts, nuts and bolts, etc. But each assemblage is not about those small pieces, rather the relationship between each piece and the next. 

ANGELA MERON’s work began as an investigation of feminist art of the 70’s and a consideration of its relevance today. Investigations into conversation as an element of change, opens the door to many possibilities. Language evolves into assemblage, collage, photographs and paint. The work of building assemblages gives way to new work. What We Keep: Re-Writing History is a body of work that began over ten years ago and was abandoned in her studio for various reasons. With its move across the country and subsequent unpacking, she was literally staring at her past. Working with stored finished canvases as substrate, the saved objects from years of collecting in the studio, still addressing those earlier works – is a process not unlike starting a life over. It has provided opportunity to rewrite history. She is intrigued by the things we keep - both the tangible things we drag from room to room, office to office, house to house - and from a past life into a new life. 

ANGELA MERON is a designer and visual artist, born and raised in Iowa. She lives in New Mexico. Her personal practice as a visual artist began in 2004, while at Grand View University in Des Moines, IA. In 2010, at Vermont College of Fine Arts, she completed her MFA in Visual Art with an emphasis in Sound, Video and Installation.  She is currently Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at New Mexico Highlands University.
