Oil Painting by John Westmore

John Westmore is a Melbourne-based artist. He has been involved in supporting the plight of Tibetan refugees living in remote communities in India and Nepal for many years.

John travelled to India, Nepal and Tibet with US-based artist Phillip Sugden and travel photographer/writer Carole Elchert in 1986. A rare opportunity arose while in Kathmandu for the artists to journey to Tibet. At this time Tibet and capital Lhasa was open to very few foreign travellers. This experience inspired Sugden and Elchert to organise a cultural arts expedition to the Himalayas and Tibet in 1988. He later travelled to the Ladakh region of Nth India in 1992/93 and the Kailash region of western Tibet in 1995.
