Oliver Michaels creates images through the composition of different architectural elements as found in specific places. The original pieces are mostly photographed in locations around Greenpoint, Brooklyn where the artist is currently based, but also around Rockaway, Queens, and Orlando or Miami, Florida. The digital collages seek consistency in the assemblage of fragments, identifying a common style or pure formal resonances among elements. The results are imaginary buildings, isolated against a mundane background and emerging as ambiguous sculptures which summarize the character of a whole area. The images composition makes direct reference to the seminal work of Bernd and Hilla Becher while playing with the idea of reinventing the found buildings.

Oliver Michaels is a graduate of Central Saint Martins School of Art in London. He has exhibited at P.S.1, New York, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Cobra Museum of Modern Art, Amsterdam, Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris, and Tate Britain, London. His works belong to many permanent collections including MOMA, New York, Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama, and Krefelder Kunstmuseen, Germany. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn.
