The architectural photographer Julius Shulman (1910-2009) became an icon in the world of mid-century modernism, revered world-wide by architects, clients, and publishers alike. In the 1950’s and 60’s, he was arguably a more famous and sought-after figure than most of the architects whose work he presented. There were a few others who successfully captured images of modern buildings and landscapes, but none with the comprehensive skills of artist, teacher, mentor, advisor, and friend to so many.

He possessed an extraordinary ability to showcase the essence of architectural designs and their relationship with the surrounding environment. His images often highlighted the interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces, emphasizing the unique features of each project while maintaining a sense of harmony and balance.

Today, it is not an exaggeration to say that our knowledge and understanding of mid-century architecture, particularly homes, is largely based on the thousands of images he captured.
