A Modernism Week Exclusive - Two (2) nights for two (2) couples in the privately owned 1958 Frank Lloyd Wright ‘Ablin House’, including a catered dinner.
The 1958 Ablin House by Frank Lloyd Wright is privately owned, rarely opened to the public and never available for overnight stays.... until now, exclusively for Modernism Week's "Best of Modernism - Holiday Edition" online auction. This priceless opportunity even includes one catered dinner for the winning bidder and guests. Wow!! Someone is going to get a holiday present to remember!
A Friday and Saturday overnight stay in the Frank Lloyd Wright 1958 Ablin House in Bakersfield, CA. Yes, Bakersfield - there's a Richard Neutra and a Cliff May house there too! The Ablin House is virtually unchanged from its original condition and retains ALL the Wright-designed furniture and built-ins. This alone is worth a very generous winning bid!
Mrs. Maggie Ablin, of Bakersfield California, wrote a humble letter to Frank Lloyd Wright asking him to consider designing a home for her family, but giving ample opportunity for FLW to beg off the commission if too insignificant. The letter must have touched Mr. Wright, he accepted the commission and the design for the Amblin Residence was one of his last before his passing in 1959.
The meticuously maintained house is a hexagonal-type Usonian and FLW used the triangle shape liberally in plan, section, and detail. Salmon-tinted concrete block and Philippine mahogany are used throughout the house. A pierced block design, the negative space of which echoes the floor plan of the house itself, expresses the kitchen core allowing filtered northwestern light into the space. A design feature that Mrs. Ablin, with a husband and 7 children, appreciated as all her time in the kitchen became a pleasant experience for her. The living room has a massive fireplace and features a 48-foot expanse of glass that opens to views to the surrounding grounds and golf course.
To remember your stay, the winning bidder also receives the book, Frank Lloyd Wright Mid-Century Modern (Rizzoli 2007), which includes the Ablin House. This book is no longer in-print and has become a valuable collectable. This donated book, in like-new condition, can be signed with thanks to the winning bidder by Modernism Week Board Member Alan Hess, the author of this and 20 other books on architecture.
