12 American Sailing Ship Plates
12 Collectible Plates
These plates or chargers were given to Tony Krason (Ocean Point Inn) by Captain Barnes. They are commemorative Wedgewood plates from the American Sailing Ship Porcelain Plates 200th Anniversary Series 1950 Issue by George C. Wales.
The outer rim of each plate has a set of 4 different sailing ship depictions, with almost every major style of sailing ship shown. A brief history of each ship is printed on the reverse of the plate. Massachusetts artist Alexander Crane (1904-1953) designed this series of plates and his name is represented on the reverse as a crane (bird) between the letters A and C. The plates were illustrated by his friend, Boston architect and marine artist George C. Wales (1868-1940). Each plate is marked on the underside with the Wedgwood mark used in the 1940 to 1974 period.
Each plate is colored in Wedgwood's Panama Brown and Cream Each plate is about 10 3/4" (27.3 cm) in diameter and is about 1" (2.5cm) high. The colors of the plates all match, despite the variation in the colors of the photographs on this auction site.
