The object, "Doug", celebrates the resiliency and adaptability of both an object and its relationship to the user. It highlights the cycle of reuse and circularity while allowing itself to transform and evolve. "Doug" invites user choice as a piece that is beautiful from all sides and isn’t defined by a single perspective. The sustainable story contributes to our collective design ethos of thinking broader, thinking of each other and thinking of the power of design to shape a greener planet.
To bring Doug to life, we worked with our amazing friends over at Urban Machine. As an industry, we have made a conscious effort to make our projects more sustainable, especially in the materials we use. Urban Machine reclaims wood waste from construction and demolition sites and turns it into high volume, locally sourced premium lumber products. Their machine removes the bulk fasteners and surface materials, like nails, from reclaimed lumber, so that it is ready to use for new projects.
For the final step, we partnered with the talented folks at Joinery Structures to bring our design to life through their reliable expertise and attention to craft.
These partnerships allowed us to turn our object from a pile of discarded Douglas Fir wood to Doug, our useful companion.
