Navajo Rug Woven in the Ganado Tradition, mid century

The rug measures 64” x 40.5” and is in pristine condition - no holes, blemishes, fading, or flaws. Woven of local, homespun wool dyed with natural and aniline dyes, it is clean and appears unused. Note the spirit line in the lower right corner. This is the pathway of the weaver as she leaves the spirit world of her work.

The Ganado weaving tradition features central diamond shapes (single or double) enhanced with a deep red color, known as ‘Ganado Red,’ that can comprise the piece's background or serve as an accent. This rug features a double diamond in the center flanked by a dramatic lightening motif on either side. Colors include (Ganado) red, grey, brown, black, and white.

Ganado is a small village on the Navajo reservation in northeast Arizona. It is near the Hubbell Trading Post, which has been placed on the National Historic Register. Lorenzo Hubbell is credited with ‘inventing’ the ‘Ganado Red’ tradition when he encouraged Navajo weavers to incorporate red aniline die into their pre-WWII weavings. Today, ‘Ganado Red’ Navajo weavings are highly valued and sought after by collectors for their simple yet sophisticated designs and rich color.
