University of Redlands Wine from SURF Garden Grapes
This bottle honors Karl C. Wells, who donated the land now occupied by the University of Redlands. This Syrah represents the first grapes grown and harvested on the University of Redlands campus in over 125 years. In the 1800’s, Stillman vineyards bottled their wine on the site where Larsen Hall now sits. Today, our Syrah grapes are planted, grown, and harvested by students and staff from the Office of Community Service Learning on our Sustainable University of Redlands Farm (S.U.R.F.). SURF works to uphold the principles of sustainable agriculture and uses organic practices like crop rotation, companion planting, composting, and practices responsible water usage. Students began growing Syrah in 2015 under the tutelage of vintners Craig Suveg, Landon Meyers, Yucaipa Wine Alliance, and Preston and Mel Todd of North Cork Winery – the makers of this exciting Syrah.
