Awestruck by the towering columns of rock and the rushing water at Fingal’s Cave on a visit to Scotland’s Hebrides islands, Mendelssohn wrote his evocative overture depicting the monumental beauty and forces of nature he encountered.
Holdsworth draws from contemporary psychotherapeutic models of grief to navigate the experience of bereavement. Songs for the Dead is dedicated to the composer’s close and dear friend who has been a critical figure in the composer’s life, supporting Holdsworth as he has navigated, healed, and grown through his own losses.
Beethoven’s Fifth opens with the most famous ‘da da da duumm!’ in history. But there is more to this piece than its impactful beginning: Beethoven takes a number of simple themes and expertly weaves them into a layered musical texture, all while building a sense of dramatic urgency.
