Pheasant Lithograph -Color Print by John Gould #2

Bird lovers will want to bid on this beautifully framed John Gould lithograph of  Pucrasia Darwini,  known as Darwin's Koklass Pheasant. This new species of pheasant represent, on the eastern Chinese ranges, the buff-spotted Pucras of the more western portion of that mighty empire. Gould chose to record the bird life from Asia which, with the exception of the tropical areas of the American continent, includes the widest, and most colorful variety of bird life to be found anywhere in the world.

John Gould is arguably the most famous British ornithologist and has truly earned the nickname “the Birdman” with his prolific publication of as many as nearly 3,000 paintings of Birds!  Often referred to as the "British Audubon, during his stay in England, America’s James Audubon met with John Gould, and it may have been influenced by Audubon's life-like paintings of birds. Gould’s birds were printed as hand-colored stone lithographs, with most of the initial compositional drawings made by John Gould himself with subsequent background detail fill-in and hand-coloring work done by some of the most talented artists that he employed.
