Colorado Street Bridge from Lower Arroyo Park

This beautiful, framed pastel landscape of the Colorado Street Bridge from lower Arroyo Park was painted “en plein air” on location in Pasadena by Erin Arnold the Art Teacher, at Holy Family Catholic School. The term is a French expression that means "in the open air." Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, and Winslow Homer are among the famous artists who used natural light and surroundings to capture the colors, textures, and mood of the scene. Erin Arnold can now be counted among them!

The bridge was built in 1912 to span the Arroyo Seco, a dry creek bed that runs through Pasadena. The total length of 1,467 feet with a height of 150 feet was originally designed to carry both automobile and pedestrian traffic. Due to its accessibility, the bridge gained a tragic reputation due to the number of suicides that occurred there. By the 80s, the bridge had fallen into disrepair. It was closed to automobile traffic in 1989 and reopened in the 90s. Today, the Colorado Street Bridge is a popular tourist attraction in Pasadena, and it is used as a location for movies and TV shows. Today, the bridge remains an iconic landmark and a symbol of the city of Pasadena.
