Hand Painted Hurley Rooster

You have a rare opportunity to own one of the famous Hurley rooster replica weathervanes. Each year a different local artist has decorated a new replica wrought iron weathervane.   The rooster  is modeled after the surviving weathervane from Hurley’s original 1801 stone church.  This year the rooster has been  decorated by local artist Emma Hines.

Raised in New York, Emma is dedicated to observing the world around her. She spends a great deal of time meticulously studying the shapes and movements of water, earth, and sky. Emma received a BFA from the State University of New York at New Paltz and has exhibited work in New Paltz, Poughkeepsie, Troy, Warwick and Greenlawn, New York.

Emma had this to say about this year's rooster...

"The process of creating this rooster design came with the idea to honor the sky and the sea; two big sources of wonder and joy for me.

I used an airbrush and handmade stencils to create cloud and shell shapes that I painted onto the rooster. This technique allowed for soft color gradients that resemble fading colors of the sky and fun, graphic shapes.  When I look upwards, I am taken aback by the false simplicity of a clear blue sky or a few puffy clouds, knowing the cosmos that extend beyond are too big to even comprehend. When I look out to the sea, I can only see the waves on the surface, but I know there is a deep and wild world there as well. This underwater realm is full of mollusks and coral and critters alike, not as vast as the cosmos but yet equally mysterious. Both the sea and sky are playgrounds for the imagination and I hope the design for this year’s rooster captures that magic."

The  base is a simple yet beautiful piece of Hudson Valley bluestone which compliments the rooster not only visually, but fits hand-in-glove with Emma’s inspiration for choosing this design. Bluestone is a particularly special stone as blue stone quarries were a major industry in the Catskills in the late 19th century.
