4th Grade Community Quilt

This is the 4th Grade Community Quilt. At the start of the year, for community building, we learned about what quilts were, how they were made, and what they could represent. We read the book “The Keeping Quilt” by Patricia Polacco, which is about the story of a Russian/Ukrainian family whose babushka made a quilt that was then passed down through the generations, with each generation adding something to the quilt. We then asked students to decorate a “quilt square” (a white square piece of cardstock). They could decorate it however they wanted; they could do shapes, pictures, designs, words, whatever they wanted as long as they felt it expressed themselves in some way. Students used mixed media of markers, crayons or colored pencils to decorate their square. Then, I created a composite image of all the squares, uploaded it to the website and voila! a blanket was born!
