MILFORD ZORNES (1908-2008).
Zornes is an icon in the world of California watercolor painting, which has come to be known as the "California Style". Born in Oklahoma, he arrived in California in his late teens, at which time he began to receive art instruction. Zornes tried his hand at journalism, as well as engineering and architecture, before taking art classes from his contemporary Millard Sheets at Scripps College in Southern California. The Great Depression provided an environment in which watercolor painting could thrive, given the versatility of the medium and the lower costs of materials. The California Style was born, and continued to develop in the ensuing decades. Zornes became an active participant in that development. After working as a war artist during WWII, (which provided ample travel to exotic destinations in Asia and elsewhere), Zornes returned to Claremont, California, teaching at Pomona College. In the second half of his amazingly long and productive life, Zornes traveled the world, conducting workshops in Asia and Europe, the South Pacific and Latin America, painting all the while. Zornes was a friend of famous artist Maynard Dixon and his artist wife Edith Hamlin, and his remains are interred at the scenic property in Mt. Carmel, Utah at which he lived for many years (and, at which the remains of Dixon and his wife repose).
