“Greenbrier Clock Lobby” dry point with watercolor framed art by Kathy Boland

Dry point is drawing made on a copper plate. The copper is soft and sensitive to touch. The effect is almost like calligraphy. There are only a limited number of prints because the copper self-destructs under the pressure of printings. This view is of the Clock Lobby at the approach to the dining room just beside the elevators.

Kathy Boland is a painter and printmaker from Charleston who received her BFA from Marymount College in 1961 and studied at the Kingston School of Art in London during 1958. In 2001, she was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant in printmaking. More recently in 2011, the Charleston Community Music Association honored her for her contribution to art. In 2012, she received an achievement award at the 68th Allied Artist of West Virginia Juried Exhibition in Parkersburg, WV. Finally, in 2015, the UC Builders “Artists Among Us” luncheon honored her and two other artists.

Kathy is known for her sketches (oil, watercolor, pastel, mixed media) and prints (etching, woodcut, monotype, dry point) of the colorful gardens and parlor of the Greenbrier Resort. Her presentation of West Virginia scenery is a recurrent theme, including series such as “The Road Home” and “The Grand Dames of Charleston”.
