Seining with Save Coastal Wildlife
TRY YOUR HAND AT BEING A MARINE BIOLOGIST ALONG THE JERSEY SHORE!
Join members of Save Coastal Wildlife nonprofit as we conduct our aquatic biological surveys along the Jersey Shore throughout the summer and early fall to see what lives in the water. In years past, we have caught sea horses, puffer fish, eels, flounders, crabs and sometimes even tropical fish.
The winner of this prize will be entitled to attend one seining event this summer or early fall with Save Coastal Wildlife nonprofit. The winner will be able to bring their family, or up to six guests to an event.
Volunteers with Save Coastal Wildlife will drag a long net (called a seine net) through the water to find out what might live in the shallow parts of an estuary or bay. The catch is never the same; we may catch juvenile fish, shrimp, or even baby puffers or seahorses in the net.
Seining team members are citizen scientists. All fishes, crabs, and other aquatic creatures are identified, measured, and cataloged; and subsequently returned to the water.
The species we catch with a seine net are limitless; it all depends on what species are visiting the area when we are seining.
Join us as we discover what life lives in an estuary! You never know what we may find!
