The Element of Water

Scratch Art, water color

15.5"H x 13"W framed

The Element of Water is a scratch-art piece, created by meticulously removing---scratch by scratch---a layer of black India ink overlaying a white clay-paint base on a very thin board. I use a variety of instruments to scratch off the black layer, including a scalpel, a dental tool, and a craft knife. As I remove the black layer, I reveal the white undercoating to create my picture. In this case, you have to look carefully to see the figure that is Water, as she flows and blends with the waves and currents.  I added a subtle coloring of blue tints with a water color pencil. This piece has a simple black frame.

My reason for participating in this event is twofold. First, bringing attention to the importance of water to all life is critical. Secondly, the importance of organizations that promote education relative to water and issues such as conservation, is so worthy of support.  My hope is that this event will provide Project WET with funds to continue its wonderful work.
