The phainopepla is a shy bird that looks a bit like a small black cardinal with a noticeable crest. The male is glossy black and has a white wing patch that is visible when it flies. It can be seen throughout Arizona, but in particular, in your own backyard. You might not see it at the feeder, but look up to the highest branch on the tree. There it is, watching over you.
