Understanding Stroke and Aphasia

Stroke is a medical condition that touches many families each year. After a stroke (or other traumatic brain injury), some people experience aphasia, which is a communication impairment that may impact their speaking, understanding, reading, writing, and math but not their intellect.

Approximately 2.5 million people in America are living with aphasia right now. Chances are, you know someone who has had a stroke or who lives with aphasia.

This basket contains two books that are helpful for stroke and aphasia survivors and their loved ones.

  • The first is a copy of ARC's Guide to Living with Aphasia (Practical Advice for People with Aphasia & Their Loved Ones) from the Aphasia Recovery Connection. It is written by Carol Dow-Richards, ARC Director, along with her son David Dow, who is a stroke survivor, and Amanda Anderson, a speech therapist who works with people with aphasia. (For more information, visit The Aphasia Recovery Connection at https:/AphasiaRecoveryConnection.org )
  • The second item is a copy of the book Or So They Thought! a True Story. Written by Marina Ganetsky, a 13 year old stroke survivor, every line is straight from the trenches of real life. The book contains Marina's story as well as mini-memoirs of young stroke survivors.

The books are packaged in a Heart of Haiti metalware basket handcrafted by a Haitian artist.
