Zin Wine Lovers' Delights

Four bottles of fine vino from Sonoma, CA wine country, an A+ corkscrew to open them with, chocolate, Wild Thing coasters, and an autographed California Directory of Fine Wineries: Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino fill this basket. Know anyone that would enjoy a beautifully wrapped basket like that? Read on!

Sonoma County winemaker Carol Shelton is known as the Queen of Zinfandel. One of the most experienced, prolific, and awarded Zinmakers of all time, woman or man, since 1978, Carol has been crafting a regionally diverse line of exemplary single vineyard Zinfandels.

In 2021 Carol was named Winemaker of the Year by the Women’s International Wine Competition. This past June, Northbay Biz readers in Napa, Marin, and Sonoma County named her Best Winemaker.

This Carol Shelton Wines sampler includes the following:

“The name for our reserve wine, Rocky Reserve®, comes from the deep red, rocky soils of the Florence Vineyard, 1400 feet above Lake Sonoma and Dry Creek Valley. Rocky Reserve is a more elegant and restrained Zin, worthy of five or more years of cellaring, though it is packed with fragrant black and blue berry fruits.”

Ratings

Tasting Notes:

Nice dark-red in color, big blueberry-blackberry fruit, spicy-chocolatey oak, nicely focused acidity enhances mineral flavors, elegantly structured tannins for aging, super plush long finish!

“With the exotic complexity and food friendliness of a white Rhône-style blend, it is a ‘red drinker’s white,’ a complex alternative to the more one-dimensional white varietal wines like Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. It perfectly complements its namesake shellfish and chicken or pork dishes with buttery-creamy sauces. All previous vintages have a 90+ rating. Release date: July 1, 2022.

Tasting Notes:

Enticing nose of spicy pears and white peaches, almond paste/marzipan, a touch of honeysuckle perfume. Multi-dimensional (many layers), a hard-to-describe range of aromatics, intriguing, almost mysterious! In the mouth it is crisply dry yet creamy and round and full-bodied, with nice almond paste on crisp-yet-juicy pear fruit.

“Old Vine Mendocino Zinfandel is a treasure. Grown on the benchlands and slopes of mountainsides — this 60-plus-year-old vine Zinfandel was named for these wild-looking vines and the uninoculated, or “wild,” yeast ferment used to create it. It takes a lot of effort to tame this wild fruit, but it is worth all the trouble. Wild Thing is dangerously good!”

“A juicy bomb of fruit, this red is also well-structured, with lively raspberry, toasty spice, and roasted sage flavors that linger on a snappy finish. Drink now through 2028.”

Tasting Notes

Aromas of black cherry, ripe plum and raspberry fruit combine with a hint of cigar box, and vanilla-oak baking spice loveliness. Smoothly textured in mouth, and the palate is very creamy and round, with a finish that is long with lush jammy fruit.

Complements many foods, from savory cheese plates to decadent chocolate desserts.

Awards: 90 points, Wine Enthusiast

Tasting Notes

Mocha, cherry cordial, a whiff of raisinets, lovely chocolate syrup with a slight touch of mint chip, black pepper, and orange peel in the nose. In the mouth are explosions of dark chocolate and coffee, with gorgeous jammy black raspberry with a slightly chewy texture and well-balanced sweetness.

A perfect pairing with the Black Magic Late Harvest Zinfandel. 3 oz tin
