Special Warfare Operator (Seal) Matt Leathers Knife
On February 19, 2013, Special Warfare Operator First Class (SEAL) Matthew J. Leathers was lost at sea during training exercises prior to deployment. He was a highly decorated combat veteran with numerous awards which include the Bronze Star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
During his nine years with the U.S. Navy SEALs, Special Warfare Operator First Class Matthew Leathers used many different knives for many different purposes. While they were all useful, he didnāt find one that was perfect. Matt, the perfectionist, decided that if he was to ever have a good, all around utility knife, he would have to make it himself. So, he did.
He made it with his own hands, pounding it out night after night until he was satisfied. He used steel from the coil spring of a scrapped Humvee and built his own forge from an old mailbox. Soon his fellow SEAL teammates began noticing his project and offered their own advice and input. As they saw the knife begin to take shape, their interest grew, and many offered to pay Matt if he would make an extra knife. Soon the whole team wanted one.
In Mattās honor, his father Tim formed a company and entered into an agreement with Buck Knives to make the exact knife Matt designed. Tim has provided knives without cost to as many SEALs as possible.
