Glass Sponge (Large) PRO

Original Painting by Tammy Flynn Seybold, oil on panel, 36" x 24", 2020. (Exhibited in the "Saving Sea to Sky" exhibit, Bowan Island. This painting represents something exquisite and massive, yet rarely seen. Many don't realize that the BC coastal regions are home to some of the largest and most ancient living organisms in the world: the glass sponge reefs. These colossal, yet fragile, towers of silica can reach 50 m in height and cover huge swaths of the ocean floor. They provide essential habitat and spawning grounds for the species of the Great Bear Rainforest, yet are under threat from bottom trolling fishing techniques and warming oceans. Since most images of these white, undulating forms are blurry or murky, I wanted to bring their massive but delicate nature to light, using oil and a layering, glazing painting technique. I hope the result is a hauntingly beautiful piece that hints at the majesty of the reefs. This ready-to-hang painting is on a thick 1.5" wood panel with medium brown wood edges.
