Grizzly (PRO)
Pastel on Sanded Card, Framed.
The idea for this painting came to me via a friend. One day he was hiking down to the shores of the Stikine when he sensed something nearby. He froze, turned and stared into the face of this Grizzly, who was hunkered down near the base of a tree, seeming unconcerned that a human was about 6 feet from him. My friend slowly backed up, waiting for the Grizzly to charge. Fortunately for my friend, the Grizzly continued his lazy daydreams and my friend lived to take a lot of photos of this bear from a much further distance. The painting attempted to capture the intent stare the Grizzly gave my friend, as though deciding if he was hungry enough to get up from his nape to attack. For me the goal was to achieve the stare with as few pastel strokes as possible, conveying a bold, in your face, portrait of the top predator.
