Herring Bait Ball (PRO)
This piece is in support of Pacific herring conservation. Herring serve a vital role by providing sustenance for a variety of wildlife. When frightened by predators, they form a tight, spherical school, called a bait ball. In this painting, I wanted to capture the action of bait ball formation. The fish were stamped on the canvas using sponges in a variety of shapes. The result of this method is that some fish are more transparent than others, addressing the fact that Pacific herring stocks have been declining over the last 100 years. Size: 16" x 12" painting only; 18.5" x 14.5" with frame. Medium: Acrylic on canvas board Description: The background is a dark blue to light blue gradient with hints of green, the fish are dark blue, light blue, grey, silver and white. The white and silver fish have a shimmery finish. The rest of the painting has a matte finish. A grey wooden frame complements the painting. The frame is included in this auction listing.
